Self Care Sounds Vol 6 | Juneteenth Unity Games

Meet B'ria: Co-Owner of Juneteenth Unity Games

We had the pleasure to talk to and meet with Juneteenth Unity Games in Texas for their annual Unity Fest that takes place in Dallas, Tx. We talked about togetherness and how the taking the time to play can be an important aspect to our mental health. Check out the Self Care Sounds Playlist and IG Live Interview Below!

What made you choose this selection of music?

  • We chose this selection of music as an ode to uplift the African American people. Juneteenth is a day of freedom. We wanted to cultivate a playlist that was inspired by that.

What brings you joy?

  • My family. It sounds cliché but my family is definitely my happy place. Spending time with my mom & son can get me through just about anything.

What would you do to self care if you had no money?

    • Just take time for myself. I would probably take a hot bubble bath and just simply… be. Might listen to some music or read a book and just enjoy the silence.

How important is it to bring awareness and rememberance to Juneteenth?

    • It is super important that people are aware what Juneteenth actually is. The day the remainder of the slaves were freed, two years after the emancipation proclamation. It’s a Texas specific holiday, but important for everyone to know about in our history.

If you could talk to your younger self what would you tell them?

    • Another Cliché, however, I would definitely tell myself “it’s a lot less work to just actually do the work.”

What is your favorite game that will be played during this years Juneteenth Unity Games?

    • I think my favorite addition this year is Warp Speed. The competitive spirit in me cant wait to watch and participate!

What made you choose your profession? Do you enjoy it? If not, what would you rather be doing?

    • I love what I do. My mother and I have always been looking for ways to start a business together so when we had this idea is was perfect. Mixing all of our talents with athletics, networking and graphic design it just came together so naturally.

How do you stay sane while planning events?

    • We start early so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming when we take days off. This year we took off almost 6 months because I was pregnant. But because we started planning again 2 weeks after our inaugural event we never got behind on what needed to be done.

What made you start your business?

    • Originally the field day was just an idea with a few friends to get us out of the house when we thought Covid would be over sooner. It quickly turned into a bigger (and much better) idea when I started planning it with my mom to become an actual event. Juneteenth Unity Games was born shortly after the George Floyd protests began, when we felt that we could use our platform to educate on black history, culture and pride in a fun and creative way. Sometimes we just need to be happy and free. That is the environment that My mom & I created.

What do you do to self care?

    • My self care these days mostly just consist of taking naps or breaks when I need them. Occasionally I’ll have to call the girls for a good brunch date without the kiddos. J A couple mimosas always save the day lol
